Explore Nature on Santiago: First Excursion with Sambala

Sambala is a big development near Praia. The first phase is already open and tourists and long-stayers are beginning to arrive. The Nature Guide Service we have trained and set up over the last years will hopefully be useful for those of them who want to discover wild Santiago.

With two of our guides, Fredy and Celestino, we showed Ben, Pete and Trish some of the hikes in Santa Cruz.
First we walked around the dammed lake. We saw spoonbills, greenshanks, sandpipers, plovers, stilt, gallinule, grey heron, little egret, cattle egret, passerinho, rock pidgeon, spectacled warbler, blackcap, waxbill, ... not bad for a first quick look.
In Ribeira Montanha we caught a glimpse of two endemic purple herons on their nesting tree.

Then we hiked into Montengro Canyon: a barn owl greeted us.
